INDIA: INSIDE THE GLOBAL BRIGHT SPOT

Even as growth slows in many of the developed nations, India continues to be the fastest-growing large economy. The IMF has raised its growth forecast for the country for FY25 to 7 percent from 6.8 percent projected in April.

India’s robust growth, though, is no accident. Over the last 10 years, the government has implemented many structural reforms that have fundamentally bolstered India’s economic strength. Massive public investment in infrastructure, generous schemes for boosting local manufacturing, simplification of tax systems, and ease of doing business have unshackled India’s true potential. In addition, political stability, astute monetary policy, and pathbreaking digital public infrastructure have ensured that India becomes a lighthouse in a sea of global challenges.

The architect of this upward trajectory is, of course, the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi. His crystal-clear view on complex economic and geopolitical issues have made India a preferred destination for global investors and the preferred partner of countries that believe in a rules-based global order. He has single-mindedly pursued the mission to make India an emerging superpower, unleashing the potential of a country of 1.4 billion people. At the News9 Global Summit, the Hon. Prime Minister elaborated on his vision for a Viksit Bharat, ensuring that India remains the global bright spot in the decades to come.

INDIA AND GERMANY: A BOND FORGED IN HISTORY AND FUTURE

Think Germany, and most of us would conjure up the image of the iconic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Think of a German, and it would be Max Müller—the 19th-century scholar and Indologist who unveiled the mystic Indic civilization to thousands of Germans and other Westerners. In his book India: What Can it Teach Us?, Müller wrote, “If I were to look over the whole world to find out the country most richly endowed with all the wealth, power, and beauty that nature can bestow…I should point to India.” Even 150 years ago, Müller could see beyond the poverty of a colonized nation to its natural bounty, cultural heritage, and latent potential.

Germany and India have long shared a spiritual bond that transcends trade and commerce. Today, Germany remains India’s most significant partner in Europe, with over 2,000 German companies operating in India and investing nearly $15 billion in FDI since 2000. Meanwhile, more than 200 Indian companies in Germany generate billions in revenues and employ tens of thousands. With 43,000 Indian students in German universities, they form the largest cohort of foreign students in the country. Bilateral trade between the two nations currently stands at $34 billion, with immense potential to hit $100 billion in the near future.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the relationship with Germany has been elevated to new heights. The frequent meetings between PM Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz—including twice in 2023—underline the strategic importance both nations place on their partnership.

The News9 Global Summit, held in Stuttgart, Germany, from November 21 to 23, 2024, brought together key stakeholders from both nations to ideate and collaborate on strengthening bilateral relations. Hosted at the state-of-the-art MHP Arena with the co-host VfB Stuttgart and the support of Baden-Württemberg, the summit was a groundbreaking three-day event.

The summit featured high-level discussions, fireside conversations, cultural performances, and awards, creating a dynamic platform for politics, business, civil society, sports, and entertainment leaders from both nations. It was a resounding success, fostering meaningful dialogue and setting the stage for deeper cooperation between India and Germany.

As we reflect on this milestone event, the News9 Global Summit has cemented its place as a pivotal moment in India-Germany relations, creating pathways for collaboration that will benefit not just the two nations, but the global community.

Vielen Dank to everyone who participated and made the summit an unparalleled success!

Srinagar to Stuttgart: The Consumer Story

India's consumer market is the world's fifth largest and is projected to become the third largest by 2026. India’s young population is expected to keep the consumption engine humming for years to come. The Indian consumer story has emerged as a compelling saga, with a generous dose of modernity and aspiration. Driving this narrative are evolving consumer preferences, propelled by the convergence of two key drivers: the formalisation of the economy and the burgeoning consumption patterns. While urban areas exhibit higher spending on discretionary goods and lifestyle products, rural consumers prioritise essentials. It’s a story of evolution driven by changing lifestyles, aspirations and economic realities. This confluence of opportunity & challenges has made India an attractive destination for foreign companies.

Sportstainment: Harnessing Soft Power

Prime Minister Modi had famously said that ‘it is not an era of war’, because in the 21st century, soft power reigns supreme. Sports and Entertainment are like a boxer’s 1-2 punch, which is the most common and e¬ective combination in a world of hard truths and shades of grey. These are the levers of soft power and when used effectively, can enhance a country’s global influence and position. It’s all about controlling without coercion and the field of entertainment and sports gives a nation an upper hand in the world of perception.

Energy Transition: Fuelling Green Growth

A clarion call has been sounded by nations across the world, to use renewable energy in combating climate change. Promotion of sustainable energy sources is right on top of the agenda of every nation. More than 70% of global emissions come from energy use. The transition to cleaner power generation is imperative for fuelling sustainable growth. Should green energy be looked at only through the prism of cost-benefit to the P&L, or is there a larger global cost and benefit of future generations the key? Does green energy make business sense or is it just a tick in the box for nations or corporations? How long before the black coal turns green?

MY NAME IS JAAN

A First-of-its-kind Solo Opera Play

My Name is Jaan is a world premiere of a highly-acclaimed solo opera play enacted by award-winning Indian actress, singer and entrepreneur, Arpita Chatterjee. Born in 1873, Gauhar Jaan was trained in classical music and dance. Her rise to fame as a celebrated courtesan and performer was meteoric, capturing the hearts of audiences with her soulful renditions in multiple languages and style.

In 1902, Gauhar Jaan’s was the first Indian voice to ever be recorded on a gramophone—by the Gramaphone company’s agent of German origin: Frederick William Gaisberg. Set against the historic backdrop of colonial India, the solo opera play, directed by Yale School of Drama fellow Abanti Chakravorty, also explores the socio-political challenges and personal betrayals that Gauhar Jaan faced. The solo play is a testament to her indomitable spirit.
